Torn Diary Pages

The mine is suddenly under lockdown. They say some big shot has arrived! Mathis said not to worry, that the investigation won't reach us. He says the person is just here to monitor mining progress, and that it's an annual visit.
But when I went to relieve myself last night, I actually stumbled upon the big shot talking secretly with the manager in a corner! I quickly hid myself and overheard them talking about how "the Crimson Marrow yield has decreased again," "the Drava Royal Institute's Furnace Legacy is almost grinding to a halt," and "the Grand Duke is furious"... It all sounded very bad. The manager could only nod and bow, constantly forcing a smile.
Then the big shot leaned closer and said a few more words... and the manager's expression immediately changed! Tsk, tsk... It's still chilling to think about now. I'm afraid that face will be a staple in my nightmares.

After that, I don't even remember how I got back to my bunk. I just remember being completely numb, lying on my bed like a corpse, all sleepiness gone.
Will the big shot just let this slide? Will the manager think we've been negligent in our supervision? Or could it be... that THING has finally been discovered by the higher-ups, so they sent someone to investigate?
*Sigh* I can't believe Mathis can sleep through this. I'll have to question him thoroughly when he wakes up and pry some truth out of him.
