"The Golden Rules of Alchemists"
A small, privately printed alchemy publication commoners circulate amongst themselves. Its tone is frivolous, and its content is half-serious, half-joking. Still, it's surprisingly popular—the pages of this one are dog-eared, as though someone carried it around constantly.
Unlike the artisans, alchemists never shy away from the unknown when pondering problems.
They always leave an empty slot in their formulas specifically for that inexplicable yet necessary unknown factor involved in a given reaction. The alchemists refer to this type of unknown variable as a .
The same catalyst, when mixed with different materials, produces countless subtle variations:
sometimes it has a catalyzing effect, sometimes it actually promotes restoration, and sometimes it even fundamentally changes a product's crystallized form.
Alchemists never seek to explain the reasons behind this; they believe that the unknown element, the reaction, and the materials used are all part of a greater, holistic process,
and this process itself is one of their golden rules: .
All potions in alchemy are derived through formulas. They even believe that the entire world is one giant formula, and the constantly changing present is the unknown within that formula.
It's said the artisans laughed aloud when they heard this.
In their eyes, there are no unknowns in the world; even if there are, they will eventually become known in the future.
One artisan jokingly asked if alchemists also need to use a formula when they relieve themselves, to mitigate the risk of constipation.
From a theoretical standpoint, I think both sides are equally matched—but when it comes to tact, the artisans are definitely lacking.
